Investing in Excellence
A lifelong connection and lasting commitment to nursing at Providence Holy Cross
Sherri and Tom Mendelson’s story began in the 1970s in a lecture hall at the University of Illinois. A late arrival, an empty seat and a simple gesture sparked a partnership that has now spanned more than five decades — four children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren later.
For the Mendelsons, Providence Holy Cross is more than a medical center. It is home. Sherri devoted more than 25 years of her career to the medical center, serving as Magnet program director and director of nursing research.
From the earliest days of its first Magnet designation, she helped build the infrastructure, culture and standards that would define nursing excellence for years to come.
Under Sherri’s leadership, the organization not only achieved its first Magnet designation, but established the research, professional development and certification programs that continue to attract and retain top nursing talent today. That culture remains a defining strength of the medical center. In 2021, Providence Holy Cross achieved its fourth consecutive Magnet designation — a distinction earned by fewer than 10% of hospitals nationwide, and one reached four consecutive times by only about 1% of hospitals in the country. As Sherri reflects, “You don’t stay at a hospital for almost 26 years if it’s not excellent.”
Tom, who joined the board in 2002 and served as treasurer for several years before being appointed to vice chair, has witnessed that excellence from another perspective.
A longtime community leader and retired executive, he has seen how strong leadership and intentional investment shape an organization’s future. “What separates Holy Cross,” Tom reflects, “is its culture. From Dr. Klein’s visible leadership to the respect between physicians and nurses, it permeates the entire organization.”
Their commitment to nursing excellence is now extending beyond their tenure. Through a planned legacy gift dedicated to nursing, the Mendelsons are helping ensure that future generations of nurses will continue to thrive — advancing research, maintaining professional certifications and upholding the standards that set this medical center apart.
While technology and facilities often capture attention, the Mendelsons understand that exceptional care begins with people. “Many donors are drawn to fund equipment or buildings,” Tom explains. “But supporting nursing excellence ensures we can continue to attract the very best caregivers. That’s critical to the long-term success of the organization.”
Today, when they are not traveling to visit their growing family across the country or spending time on their farms in the Midwest, the Mendelsons remain deeply connected to the mission of the medical center. Whether mentoring future nurses, serving on leadership boards or investing in the next generation
of caregivers, their legacy is one of family, of community and excellence. Through their philanthropy and lifelong dedication, their generosity will be felt in every nurse supported and every patient cared for.
